Memoirs of a North Bank Sage: Digging in

He’s been watching from the North Bank for more than 50 years; read the latest memoirs of a North Bank sage on wearethenorthbank.com throughout the season. And probably during the summer too!

On the Dortmund game…

I was well pleased with a point and would’ve taken that before the game. In a way I was quite pleased it was a backs to the wall sort of performance as it shows that we can do it if we have to. How many times have we gone toe-to-toe with teams and let ourselves down? We seemed a bit more sensible on Tuesday which was encouraging. It was only a brilliant goal that stopped us getting a win and they didn’t have too many clear chances throughout the game so all in all a very professional European away performance.

On conceding yet another wonder goal…

I thought exactly the same as Pat Rice. This goal reminded me of the one Danny Rose scored against us; he could try it another 100 times and it end up in the stands.

On the new players…

I was impressed with Arteta and Benayoun. They didn’t have enough of the ball to do what they’d have wanted going forward but they were both clever and used their experience. Both of them worked really hard and protected the ball when they got it. Little things like winning free kicks to take pressure off or knowing when to buy some time. That’s something we’ve lacked for a few seasons now.

On Mario Götze…

He looks quality. Dortmund have some good players, good attacking players. They reminded me of us a bit; they over played at times! You can definitely see why Wenger would like Götze at Arsenal. When he swapped shirts at the end of the game he couldn’t get our shirt on quick enough! That’s a good sign for the future I suppose.

On the media…

We always get different treatment from United, and now City also. We draw against a really good side and it’s points dropped. United get a draw and the reports say that it’s a positive start for them. I’m pretty sure Dortmund would beat Benfica yet we just don’t get the credit we deserve. People are just waiting for us to slip up whilst they seem to will United to do well.

On City…

I think they were found out a bit on Wednesday. Mancini isn’t as good as he likes to think he is. They’ve got a great squad but it takes more than just lots of expensive players. They’ll find it a lot harder at Champions League level. Nasri was his typical self; did nothing in a game when it was needed. He’s fine when things are going well but he drifts into the background when he’s really needed.

On the Blackburn game…

I was really nervous before last week’s game. It felt like a new start and it could’ve been a disaster had we not won against Swansea. I’m excited this week as it feels like we’ve given ourselves something to build on. We don’t have a bad record at Blackburn, there’s been a few hiccups, but since Allardyce, even when Hughes was there, we’ve got our share of good results.

On the rest of the season…

I think we just need to get two or three wins in the bag now, look to go unbeaten for a bit and breed a bit of belief. United have got Chelsea on Sunday so someone will drop points. If we can look after our own results for a bit we can put ourselves in a much more positive position. City haven’t played anyone yet, like Chelsea at this stage last year. There’s still a lot to play for. Come on you Gunners!
