Arsenal Set To Seal Summer Jenkinson Signing
Arsenal will complete the signing of Carl Jenkinson once the Charlton defender’s contract expires this summer.
Jenkinson, 19, has attracted interest from Manchester United, Chelsea and Fulham but will sign for his boyhood club, Arsenal.
Arsenal will be expected to pay up to £2million in compensation for Jenkinson under Premier League rules as he is under the age of 24.
The Finnish U19 Internatonal will provide cover at right and left-back but could also be loaned out at the start of next season due to his inexperience, having made just seven starts in League One.
Crystal Palace were interested in signing Jenkinson but manager Dougie Freedman had doubts over his readiness for the Championship at this moment in his career, let alone the Premier League.
Charlton Manager, Chris Powell has conceded his disappointment at losing Jenkinson: “Of course I would have liked him to sign,” said Powell. “I’m sure everyone knows I’ve identified him as a player that could play a part in our team, which he had done.
“But obviously it is his decision and his advisors and family.
“You have to sometimes abide by that because if your contract runs out you are allowed to do that because that is what freedom of contract has brought.
“I know the kid trains well every single day and he is a fantastic talent. He is first-class, and is a real credit to our academy but also to himself and his family.”
