Arsenal have had a bid for Phil Jagielka turned down by Everton.

wearethenorthbank.com understands that an initial bid of £12million was rejected by the Goodison Park club.

Jagielka, 28, has long been Arsene Wenger’s first choice centre back target.

Having failed to sign the England international last summer and in January, Arsenal are keen to get their man, although Jagielka and his family are settled in the north west.

Arsenal are looking to strengthen their defence and had an £8million bid for Blackburn’s Chris Samba turned down in May.

Gary Cahill remains a target but Arsenal are reluctant to meet Bolton’s £17million valuation for a player with one year left on his contract.
